ABI Counselling and Rehabilitation Service
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) is a complex yet often invisible disability that can have devastating and long term consequences, not only for the person with the injury, but also for their family and friends.
At Melbourne ABI Counselling, we work along side individuals with ABI and their families to maximise emotional wellbeing and functional independence.
We support our clients through the process of:
* coming to terms with changed abilities and life roles.
We work with clients to:
* facilitate adjustment to and acceptance of change that has been brought about by brain injury.
Alongside this psychological support, we encourage clients to:
* identify their strengths and find practical ways to manage their difficulties so that they may pursue meaningful activities and take on purposeful life roles.
We specialise in helping clients of all ages and abilities who may have acquired their brain injury through trauma (e.g. car accident), infection, disease, drug or alcohol use, stroke, brain tumour or who have other neurological conditions.
Melbourne ABI Counselling provides a range of specialist ABI counselling services which seek to effectively improve the lives of people who have been affected by ABI as well as their families. Our counsellors are highly experienced in the field of ABI. They bring with them extensive knowledge and understanding of the emotional and psychological challenges faced by a person whose life has changed as a result of ABI.
The consequences of ABI for the person with the injury and their family can be long term and far reaching. The full extent of these consequences may not be realised until a person attempts to return to their pre-injury life. The cognitive, behavioural and psychological impairments that can result from ABI may impede a person’s ability to return to previous employment, carry out domestic duties, relate to their partner, fulfil roles within the family and maintain social networks. This inability to fulfil roles that were part of a pre-injury identity can affect a person’s sense of self and if ignored, may have a devastating affect on their emotional wellbeing.
At Melbourne ABI Counselling, we work with our clients in the context of their individual cognitive abilities, in order to support them through the emotional and psychological challenges they face as a result of ABI. We provide clients with a supportive environment in which they are encouraged to talk openly about their experiences and emotions. This is an extremely valuable process for both themselves and their families.
We also aid the client, family or carer to identify and implement appropriate strategies in order to constructively manage difficult feelings and enhance emotional adjustment and wellbeing.
